Individuals and groups interested in starting, continuing, and integrating critical examination of topics related to social justice may use these discussion guides to help them plan, organize, and implement their efforts. Prior knowledge and expertise of content is not required to use these guides; instead, individuals leading these experiences should possess a strong core of facilitation skills. (A facilitation guide on facilitation skills is available for groups that are interested in increasing capacity within its membership to lead these experiences.)
These guides are designed to be flexible. Rather than prescribing exactly the sequencing, duration, and detail of discussions, community members are encouraged to consider the opportunities to meaningfully engage with the included content. While this could take place in a single session, long-term implementation is recommended to encourage continual reflection and application. Examples of long-term implementation include including content from these guides in regular meetings throughout a semester or spreading out content in professional development, planning, and group retreat settings.
Each guide comprises three sections: (1) Knowledge, (2) Awareness, & (3) Skills. Discussions do not necessarily need to follow this order; Awareness ⇒ Knowledge ⇒ Skills is a sequence recommended for consideration. When designing a session, facilitators are encouraged to make intentional choices to meet the needs of their group; this includes preparing adaptations and accommodations to support the learning of all participants.
